What people searched for at Christmas on Amazon: eight countries, three months
November and December are two different holidays. In November the most searched thing on Amazon France is an advent calendar; in December it is a gift for a man. And the season does not end on the same day in every country: in Italy it runs to 6 January, and one stocking shows it.

Amazon publishes what people search for in its own store. The report does not give a volume: it gives a place, meaning where a phrase stood among every search in that marketplace that month. First place is the most searched thing in the entire store.
We pulled three months across eight marketplaces: November and December 2025, and January 2026. That is between 52,000 phrases in Mexico and 1.5 million in the United States in a single month. Nothing below is modelled, smoothed or estimated. Anyone with access to the same report will get the same numbers.
What people search for on Amazon in November
Not gifts. In November a European shopper is buying their own December: a box with twenty-four doors.
In France and in Italy the advent calendar is the single most searched phrase in the whole marketplace. In Germany it takes three of the top four places: adventskalender 2025 second, adventskalender third, and adventskalender 2025 frauen, a calendar sold specifically to women, fourth.
In the United States the same phrase is eighteenth. America spends November differently: it has Black Friday, and in November it is buying for itself.
The most searched Christmas gift phrases in December
The change of recipient shows in all eight marketplaces without a single exception. Each country's top gift phrase climbs by tens and in some cases hundreds of places in a month.
| Marketplace | Phrase | November | December | January |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| France | cadeau homme a gift for a man | #47 | #2 | #185 |
| Italy | buono regalo amazon Amazon gift card | #75 | #5 | #26 |
| United Kingdom | gifts for women | #34 | #4 | #172 |
| Germany | geschenke für frauen gifts for women | #66 | #9 | #147 |
| Spain | regalos originales para mujer original gifts for a woman | #139 | #13 | #89 |
| Canada | stocking stuffers | #11 | #2 | #17,929 |
| United States | amazon gift card | #12 | #2 | #9 |
| Mexico | regalos para mujer gifts for women | #181 | #51 | #339 |
France travels from forty-seventh place to second. A gift for a man becomes the second most searched thing in the entire French Amazon, ahead of everything else people look for in December.
Whose gift comes first differs by country
In the United Kingdom the gift for a woman leads at #4 and the gift for a man follows at #5. In France it is the other way round: cadeau homme second, cadeau femme fourth. The United States also puts the man first, eighteenth against twentieth. Germany and Spain put the woman first, and Spain has the widest gap of the eight: thirteenth against fifty-fifth.
Spain is also not searching for a gift. Its top phrase is regalos originales para mujer, meaning original gifts for a woman. The plain regalo mujer sits at #182.
A gift search sells almost nothing
The same report names the three products that took the most clicks on each phrase, and separately the share of purchases. The two shares are measured independently, so they can be read against each other. On a gift search they disagree sharply.
On "gift for a man" the three products shown take a sixth of the clicks and a hundredth of the purchases. Almost ninety-nine percent of what people buy after that search is something other than what they were shown first. They look, and they go on looking.
When the shopper already knows what they are giving, it is a different picture: on the gift card the same three positions take two thirds of the clicks and nearly half of the purchases.
For a seller that reverses an instinct. Ranking first for the biggest gift phrase in the country buys clicks, not orders.
What a Christmas gift costs, by country
We took the products Amazon puts in front of each country's top gift search and read the price they actually sold at inside December, not today's price.
The same phrase, "gift for a man", leads to a Lacoste bracelet at eighty euros in France and to a tub of hand cream for cracked hands at six pounds in Britain.
In Germany the three products Amazon shows for "gifts for women" are all humour books. The first of them is called this:
Die Kunst, deinen Mann nicht umzubringenThe Art of Not Killing Your Husband. Germany, geschenke für frauen, second by clicks, December 2025
When the Christmas season ends on Amazon
In seven marketplaces of the eight, January returns the gift search below where it stood in November. Canada falls hardest: stocking stuffers, the second most searched phrase in the whole marketplace in December, stands at #17,929 in January.
Spain behaves differently. Its top gift phrase is eighty-ninth in January, higher than in November, where it was one hundred and thirty-ninth. Phrases that did not exist in November appear: roscón de reyes, the Kings' cake, and regalos de reyes para mujer, gifts for the Kings.
And Italy has a January peak of its own.
From fifteen-thousandth to sixtieth. And it is not one phrase: beside it sit calza befana personalizzata (personalised), calza befana vuota (empty, to fill yourself), calza befana kinder and even calza befana stranger things.
Three end dates on one continent: 25 December in France and Britain, 6 January in Italy and Spain. A campaign switched off in Italy or Spain after Christmas is switched off in the middle of the season.
What this means for a seller
November and December cannot be planned as one campaign. In November the shopper is looking for what they will open themselves; in December for what they will hand over. Different words, different products, different cost per click.
Ranking first for "a gift for him" buys clicks without orders. A sixth of the clicks and a hundredth of the purchases is not a funnel; it is a shop window somebody walks past.
The European calendar does not end on 25 December. In Italy and Spain the season runs to 6 January, and the search data says so plainly.
The price of a gift is a country-level fact. The same catalogue lands in different price expectations in different marketplaces, and Amazon's own choice of what to show first is where you can read it.
What this data does not say
The report gives a place, not a count. "Second most searched phrase of the month" is very often, but how many times exactly, Amazon does not publish, and we do not fill it in.
We count a phrase as a gift phrase when it carries a gift word in the marketplace's own language: gift, geschenk, cadeau, regalo, regali, stocking stuffer. That is a definition rather than a fact, and it is stated here so it can be argued with precisely.
Click and purchase shares belong to the three products Amazon names. What happens to everything else after the search is not in the report.
And three months of one season is one season. A trend needs the next one.
How to check this. Every figure above is a place in Amazon's search terms report for November and December 2025 and January 2026. Any seller with access to that report will get the same places for the same phrases. Nothing was averaged or recalculated.
Short answers
When does the Christmas season start on Amazon?
In November, but not with gifts. November belongs to the advent calendar: in France and Italy it is the most searched phrase in the whole marketplace. Gift phrases climb in December.
What is the most searched Christmas gift on Amazon?
A gift defined by recipient rather than by product: "gift for a woman" and "gift for a man" in the local language, alongside the Amazon gift card. In the United States and Italy the gift card is the top gift phrase of December.
When should Christmas campaigns be switched off?
In Britain, France, the United States and Canada, after 25 December. In Italy and Spain the season runs to 6 January: the Befana and the Kings produce a January peak of their own.
Where can I see this data myself?
In the search terms report in Seller Central, if you have Brand Registry. Ranks, click shares and purchase shares all come from there. We keep a set of free tools for neighbouring jobs and publish a monthly read of Amazon search across eight marketplaces.
